Institution Research

20th Century Fox
this production company is one of the 6 major American film studios, founded in 1935 it has quickly become one of the most recognised film intuition in the world. The studio is a subsidiary of News Corporation owned my Rupert Murdoch. This institution has had many successes including; Star Wars, X-Men, Ice Age, Die Hard, Predator, Alien, Planet of the Apes, Home Alone, and the most successful of all time Avatar. The majority films they have produced in the last 10 years have been of the action gener and so would make it a good contender of the big budget action film we are looking to make. Another reason why this film would institution would be suitable for our film is the fact that it is part of one of the worlds biggest conglomerates and so would have the resources to produce the special effects, music, editing and distribution from its other subsidiaries saving cost.

Warner Bros
Warner Bros is another one of the main film studios based in california and new york. warner bros is a global leader in the creation, production, distribution licensing and marketing of all froms of creative content and ther related businesses, across all current and emerging media and platforms. some of the most popular films created by warner bros are; Harry Potter, The Hangover, The Matrix and the Dark Knight. Warner Bros produce and distribute a variety of films in diffrent genres alowing our film to be easly and effectivly made and distributed.

Paramount pictures

Paramount Pictures Corporation is a film and television production/distribution company, consistently ranked as one of the larges movie studios. It is a division of American media conglomerate Viacom. Paramount is the fourth oldest existing film studio in the world behind Universal Studios, Pathé and Gaumont Pictures. Also, it is the last major film studio still headquartered in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles. over the years this production corporation has had a number of successes some of the most notiable being; Transformers, Mission: Impossible, Star Trek, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Jack Reacher. the films being made by the production comparny are big bugjet and have attracted a large following form ether high profie actors/ directors or backing a film which will turn in to a franchise. The franchise part of the busines will automatical make a porffit and historyicaly hard every make a lose as the film is builing on the fan base made from the last film and from this the Paramunt would have the capital avilible to invest in our new film and would have the potenchial if the film was a big anoth success to be made into a franchise.

possible locations

For our film location we would like a nice open space of land preferably coming across as a remote countryside location;

Ashtead common:
Ashtead Common is a big open grassland which would be perfect for a film due to this location being remote and appropriate for the scenes we want to shoot.

Box Hill:
Box Hill is an even better location to shoot as it has a mix of open areas, woodland and pathways along the river enabling us to gather a wide range of different shots with different locations around Box Hill.

Norbury park:

opening script for The Pursuit (DRAFT)

opening script for The Pursuit (DRAFT)
Opening scene: A long shot of a winter location which then cuts to a close up of a pair of eyes (Alex Turner) then to a shot of another pair of eyes (Martin Smith) A black screen appears with film credits “Action film of the year, by far up there with the best…)

Scene 2: Alex and Martin appear to enter a room (Match on action) Where Alex is betrayed by Martin. A mid shot of the room filled with bad guys and a gun to Alex’s back.

Alex “Why”…

Black out and a close up of Alex’s beaten face. Then a long shot to establish a different location of Martin with a gun to a girl whose face is covered and Alex a fair distance away.

Cut again to the release date of the film.

A mid shot is then used to show Alex is bed you can see an empty place beside him. It then jumps to a close up of his face. He notices the empty space. Where is his girlfriend?

Scene 3: A close up of Alex driving a car speeding past trees to a black out with director titles and to a close up of a girl with her face covered.

Like most action films our trailer will be mainly shots of scenes rather than speech as a cliche of an action genre are explosions and many of them. In most action films their trailer consists of a collage of shots that are not necessarly in time order but make the film seem more appealing backed up by highly paced music. In our trailer we aim to do the same, we onlt have 2 minutes so we want those 2 minutes to be exciting.

trailer analysis- Gladiator

In this trailer the use of opening titles is something used very effectively, with short statements "The General"  "Who became a slave" "The slave" "Who became a gladiator" "The Gladiator" "Who defied an Empire" that all link together and gives you the main plot to this story,  with in theses quotes there are also short cuts of footage that back up the statement shown for instance in the first statement "The General" you are given a short close up tracking shot of him leading an army. These cuts are very effective are is something i think we should consider using in our trailer.

The first words we here our hero saying is "my name is gladiator" this is re-enforcing  the name name of the film but also demonstrates how he has changed and lost his old identity.  Also in a very short space of time from the first words you hear the know well know "father to a murdered wife" quote which also tells the audience his motives behind why he is angry. from this the pace quickly fastens. The pace starts of slow giving the audience an idea of the story line and then picks up after this, to fast pasted shorts of him as a Gladiator and in the army together, theses are the stereotypical action shots you would expect to see from this sort of trailer and it it also subverting the convention of fasted paced by the way it the pace stays slow for so long.

The locations are also very juxtaposed in this trailer, firstly you see a very dark and cold setting where he is in power and then strangely when he has his freedom taken away from him the setting changes from that of dark to light, this could suggest that where he is now is his destiny and he is going to be okay.

I really like this trailer and it gives justest to an amazing film and also i think we should use the way they used titles in a similar way as they were very effective here.

Action Film Font

looking at a collective of action films from the past 10 they are all similar in front an example being is you compare "Taken" with "Wanted" they are very similar with the only difference being that "wanted" is slightly more bolder.

theses are all simply imitated for our film poster and would fit very well with the conventions of the genre.

Ideas taken from this:

  1. Red Font
  2. Simple but bold like "wanted" and "taken"
  3. Use a block colour as a background
  4. A date similar in looks to "The bourne ultimatum"
  5. a darker colour picture to contrast with the red

sound track Analysis

The soundtrack for Taken builds suspense more and more as the trailer progresses. This is because of the slow building music from slow paced to fast paced making the film seem intense and thrilling. We aim to use similar music in our trailer to enthrall the audience and build suspense for this upcoming film.  The build up in pace of the music accompany whats on screen very well this is due to it  starting off slow to set the scene then picking up for the action parts of the trailer.

The master has a drumbeat going on throughout which builds in pace as the trailer progresses. This builds suspense within the audience and draws them into the action along with the music as it builds in pace. We would like to use something like this in our film as the building beat of a drum would match our action perfectly and have the effect on the audience we are looking for.

Font resarch

The pursuit

This would not work very well as an action film font as it is not eye catching enough to attract potential audience members but would rather suit a film of the drama genre as it would be taken more seriously

The Pursuit

This font certainly bold enough to work for our film it’s not quite what we are looking for as letters like the p is not as sharp as we are after in comparison to the font below.

THE PURSUIT

I like the recognition you get with this font and the connotation of the army it hold, because of this I think it should be considered for our font. On the other hand the audience may associate this font with other movies like “The A Team” which also uses a similar font and so may result in the film not standing out as well as it could using a different font.

The Pursuit

This font although very aesthetically pleasing would not work with the convention of action film font being very bold and different a convention of the genre we are keen to adhere to.

The Pursuit

This font contains all the keen elements that we are looking for in our film, the boldness helps the film name stand out while the broken lines give the effect of danger we are keen to convey with our film.

The Pursuit

This font would also work well for our action film or a film of a similar genre, it has the boldness that would make it easily identified by audiences` when comparing the this one with the one above, would decide against this one in favour for the other one.

trailer analysis- The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is the last in the recent Batman trilogy, it has build up a massive fan base from viral marketing companies and the success off the last two film, it has been widely awaited.

The trailer starts off with the initial diagetic sound of a boy singing the american national anthem, after this scene is finished the sound turn in to non-diagetic and keeps on playing under the initial statement " you are as precious to me as you were to your own mother and father and i swore to them that i would protect you, and i havent" this is said by a constant and well recognizes character throughout the movies, this also suggests that some harm has come to him or will come to Batman. but when you look at the next couple of lines of dialogue "hes a hero" "a war hero this is peace time" and "a storms coming Mr Wane" are very juxtaposed and could be put there to confuses the audience, this technique fallows the trailer to the end and still in the back ground you can here the boy singing. When the singing cuts out chanting begins, this is something that is not normally seen in trailers like this but when the meaning of the chanting is relies you can see it holds meaning to the tile of the film.

The pace of this film is slow and loops around back to the opening scene at some sort of stadium, unlike other trailers no plot line is given away and so this suggests that they are relining on the success of the last two films to curry over the audience it could also be that the audience needs to watch the film to find out the how it ends.

I think that for our type of film this trailer would be to hard to try and recreate and without a franchise to back it, it would be even harder to deliver the desired effect.

presination of trailer idea

drama

Beasts of the southern wild

The no-diagetic music in the trailer is constant tough out the trailer but fades in and out at pivotal points in the film, an example being the storm where the diagetic sound of the rain, thunder and lightning takes control and overpower the music, the way the music flows form different scenes also connects to the dialogue at the start of the film "the whole universe depends on everything fitting together just right" this fitting the music to a key theme in the film also helps the audience feel that this story is a child take on natural disaster and her beliefs on life, also the music present in this trailer has a child like feel to it with its constant chimes and the over lay of the violin on the piano (35 secs), by reling on the sound to change the mood of the trailer helps convay to the audience that an otherwise dark situation e.g her father dyeing and a flood destroys her village the music shows that it is still a positive story.

The font used in this trailer is "Times" a very traditional and well known font and for me personaly is also the first thing i change when i go to type as i like most people feel like this font is to old and outdated when compairing it to its newer counterparts. The font is also very realy used in films as it is seen as boring and does not stand out something that alot of film are ament to do, because of this you would expect this font to have the same effect when talking about this film but it fact it has a very diffrent effact. the effect this has on the way the film is veiwed is that it helps it be taken seriously and gives it an image of being important and should not be ignored by The way this font is used to connote with power and authority. this use of font to display the way that others seen the film aswell also creates the same effect.

The pace of this trailer moves from fast to slow but with the upbeat music constant thought out the trailer maintains a happy feeling with the one exception of the longest scene in the 1min 58 seconds of footage with 10 seconds dedicated to the storm scene when this occurs all music is cut out and so as previously explained creates a darker effect. the sorter scenes such as the main character jumping from tier to tyre crates a light hearted atmosphere and also give a good over view of the movie without divulging any main plot twists in the film
image 1

image 2
Shots in this film are very complex with a mixture of long sequence shots and short fast passed ones when the trailer wants to add tension and also it is effective in keeping the audience interested, one of my favourite shots in this film is the one shown in the poster (image 1). the way the main character runs towards a still camera is a very different shot, as normally when someone is running or moving in anyway the camera used a lot of different shots to keep the audience interested whereas with this the added light stimulation keep the audiences interest without the need for any other shot types and creates a very effective and interesting shot, so much so that is the centrepiece for the poster. Another interesting shot is the low mid shot used in image 2. the multidimensional aspects in this shot for me is the most effective in the whole sequence of shots for example in the foreground of this shot there is tree foliage giving the effect that the character is acting very naturally as if she isn’t being filmed whereas in the background there are tires and hay bales suggesting poverty and an un-natural playing environment for a chided. Using the rule of thirds to analyse this screen shot you can see that the viewer’s eye is naturally drawn to the juxtaposed image of man main objected in a very natural environment again highlighting the poverty of the area. When the girl moves in to the centre of the screen you notice what she is wearing; willies, vest and pants this adds to the viewer’s understanding of the poverty of the area.  My film will not have a political message of poverty and global worming I like the effectiveness of the foreground foliage and the effect it creates and would work well in my film trailer.

costume ideas

Heros costume

possible costume one for Josh
Theses are two of the possible costumes that our hero might where is the film, the casual jeans and hoodied shown in costume one we would aim for him to idealy wear at the start of our film to represent in him in a civilain setting and relatively normal persona. The use of casual clothes will also appeal to our target audience as his is wearing simial clothes to what they would sterotypically wear. In the second image, a man in a suit, will possibly be used later on or in the marketing of our film to create a more profesional image and also to highlight the seriousnes of his mission. The overall impression we aimed to give is that of a significant change in charecter from start to end.

possible costume two for josh
Villian costume

For this costume we are aiming to keep it simple with a plan black leather jacket, with ether smart trousers or jeans. The leather jacket is very sterotypical of a villian and also a typical action costume due to the hard wearing nature and its connotation with racing. This would be ideal for our villian and also it would be easy to get hold of.

Victim

For our victim we are going to have one constant costume, that will hopefully be as shown above. If this costume is not available then something very similar will work, the main impression we are trying to convey is that of her being very normal and innocent in an effort to provoke an emotional reaction.

audience profiling

Taken

Taken was released as an 18 something that is rarely seen in the movies word today as it alienated the a majority of people aged 15 to 24 that have the time and disposable income to spend at the cinema, for an action film Taken also appealed to more female viewers than another film audience profiling I have looked at with 46% this suggests that there is something in this film that appeals to woman this will be important for our group to find out and recreate as trying to appeal of woman in an action film is very stereotypically hard to do. the film also appeals to a wide range of people with it split equally around the social class groups with the exception of C1 which are always the more dominant of the categorises as well as this the film appeals to a wide range once you get above the ages of 12-14 which can be explained with the fact that it is an 18. when taking in to account that the film wasn’t a commercial success and just made a profit the film developed a cult following with most of its money being made is dvd sales after the initial realise.

looper

Lopper staring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis again rated very highly among our target audience of 15-24 year olds but failed to draw in the 25-34 audience possibly because Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeals to the younger audience of 15-24 whereas Bruce Willis would appeal to the older generation of 35-44, the second highest, as Bruce Willis is a very stereotypical action hero from the diehard franchise, and so neglecting the 25-34 age group. Something in our film we should learn form and try to draw in the 25-34 age group by using characters that are well known throughout the age ranges. This film also lacks female viewers but this is stereotypical to the genera with Taken as an abnormality.

Casino Royal

Casino Royal was the 21st film out of now 23 in the james bond franchise , it was the first james bond film in 4 years and the first with the current james bond Daniel Craig

possible location

this i feel would be perfect to use for a scene it has just been cleaned here but with some leaves on the floor accompanied by the green on the fence and the tap on the all. This location would work better in the dark and if we manage to film missing out the window to create a abandoned effect.

mood board

1.      The main character would be in a suit, this would show his status and juxtapose with the character he will soon become

2.      The hero’s girlfriend will feature minimally in the trailer but her being kidnapped in the catalyst that starts the film of.

3.      The house explosion will be filmed using miniatures it will show the film to be high budget.

4.      A gun will be used to conform to the stereotype of all action films.

5.      Knife will be used this will be one of the first scenes to wound our hero.

6.      Ideally our location would be in a remote snowy location.

7.      The close up of the fight scene will allow us to make the scene shorter and easier to choreograph.

8.      The contrast in lighting would work to make the audience question if he is actually the good guy.

9.       The extras in our film will mainly be dressed the same and have similar characteristics.

10.  Our main villain will be a well-trained and smartly dressed.

11.  A mid shot of the villain being approached by the hero.

12.  A shot of the damsel in distress where we see her trying to escape.

13.  Shot of man sleeping. Will be shown at the very start of the film

14.  Liam Neeson is a character similar to our own, in the way that he will stop and nothing to get someone back.

possible footage - Spain

i shot like this i feel will really add something to our film as it is underwater, something that if edit correctly could be really effective in our action film. If we were to use a this shot it would be placed with a sequence of clips we would also focus on the movement out of the water and back under; showing a boat, as i feel that is the most important part in the film and also draws on the blue water.

i really like the rugged setting seen in this clip and it would highlight a very exotic location, if this was to be used it would need to been very edited and only use a few seconds of footage showing the water hitting the rocks, as the movement to the rocks is to shaky due to the fact i was holding a hand held camera and moving around the rocky tarain. The effect this shot gives for life been both beautiful and dangerous would be a good image to end our trailer on.

This panning shot of the cliffs was taken as the same  location as the clip above and so we will ether use this piece or the one above due to the similarities in the shot and us not wanting our viewer to be bored.

another underwater shot, longer and a lot more movement in this shot making it hard to use. The aim was to try and capture some fish but there had just been a storm so there were non to be seen. I
personally prefer the first underwater shot shown and feel it would be more appropriate to an action genera.

Questionnaire results

The questionnaire we gave out to an audience aged 10+ the results are as followed with each questions results being shown in chronological order:
  • 1. 10 - 20 =  8   21 - 30 =  4   31 - 40 =  3   40+ =  5

  • 2. cinema =  8   TV = 4   DVD =  5   Internet = 3

  • 3. Action = 12  Romance =  2  Comedy = 4   Horror = 1

  • 4. 0 = 3   1-5 =  10  6+ =  7

  • 5. Yes =  15   No = 5

  • 7. Yes = 18 No = 2

The results indicated a large amount of movie viewers who are aged 10 - 20 are going to the cinema to watch films followed by DVD release; most of which watch at least 5 movies w eek and the trailer does have an impact on whether or not they watch the film being shown. Our trailer will incorporate action cliches that will drawn in an audience so that they will want to pay money to see "The Pursuit".

western

Django Unchained, Directed by Quentin Tarantino and staring Jamie Foxx, Don Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio. The plot revolves around  a slave-turned-bounty hunter sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal Mississippi plantation owner,With the help of his mentor. The fact that it is directed by Quentin Tarantio will naturally bring in people who are fans of his previous films; Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill, the same way a people will go and see Steven Spielberg's new film purlely because of his name and reputation for creating big budget Oscar winning films.

The music in this film starts with a well known country artist Jonny Cash with one of his songs that has got alot of publisty considers its age and the fact that Cash is now dead, inspiring the Jonny Cash Project, the solemn mood of the song creates a serous atmospher for the film and coupled with the word of the song "aint no grave can hold my body down" depicting the horrors of slavery  As this is playing in the back ground you can hear the diagectic sounds of chains as rattling as an extrem close up of the chains around black slaves feet creating the sound, again highlights a key theme in the film and also helps set a time period for the viewers  The juxapostion between the solemn music and the jazz music that takes its place creates a sudden change of mood and allows the film to take a different course than the audience was expecting the trailer.

the dialog in the tailor is more than you would expect to see in a typical western film, where stereotypically a minimal marketing techneaque is applied to draw the audiences attention to the action scenes whereas in this trailer there is much more emphasis on the story line beginning explained. one possible reason for this different style could be that in recent years the genera has very much been neglected by the industry with only a handfull of films fitting with the conventions of the western genera being made with the most recent example being "cowboys vs alians" staring danial crage and Harrison ford, despite the big names associated with the the film it was ultimately wasn't considered a comershial success by only just making a profit; suggesting that the audience for westerns just isn't there. on the other hand if anyone can make a film a success it would be one of the most well known directer`s in the industry Quentin Tarantino, this would draw in a large number of people who like his work and also for Tarantion's trademark violence and gore that isnt as much associated this the genera  this gore aspect is highlighted in the dialog close of the end of the tailor "kill white people and get payed for it, sounds good to me".

possible footage- Austraila

the footage above was taken during the festival of lights organised by a local art institute. To create the effect shown on buildings and landmarks they use high powered projectors and project the image on the the buildings. The footage was taken when i was walking around and so i was reliant on my hand keeping still which was very hard with the type of camera i was using, i think most of this footage taken would be hard to work into the trailer but it will still be kept as an option just encase it does fit, as i would really like to include the last video in the night time footage as i feel it is very impressive piece of art but sadly not what we are at the moment looking for in our film.

The two videos above were taken on a ferry that crosses the harbor. again it was taken by hand and it was very ruff due to a storm that was coming in (you can see some of it in the video below)
but i feel if we edit it correctly it would work really well to highlight the drastic change in locations stereotypical of an action film.

Taken on a local beach the morning after the worst storm of the year, a lot of background wind but that can be edited out. just thought it was impressive and could work in a fast pace sequence.

possible footage for my film - america

a night sceen of a road with traffic blurring the other way would work well as a trasition shot, and also as away of showing time scale.

showing a desert locaton could possibily fit into our film but showing differnet location; a sterotype of the action genra and also work as a fast paced shot. the footage is shakeing so would have a be very short to try and avoid this being shown

the footage here was taken at the Hover damm a impressive landmark due to the scale of it, it has been used in action films and so the audence may be able to recognice it, if not then it is still a impressive shot and could be easy to work in to the trailer.

this iconic Las Vagas landmark was something a took party just to remeber it, i dont think it would very well in a action film and would be hard to work it in with the footage we plan on taking.

super hero

The genre of this film is superhero, this is known to me and the audience as Spider Man is a prominent film character with 3 recent films about this comic book charterer. The Narrative of this trailer moves in chronological order; starting with the memory form when his parents leaving him for and unknown reason the loss of the main characters (peter parker) is a common theme throughout the trailer and is shown to be one of the unique selling points of the film as the question of his parents has not be explored in the other films.  by going back and focuses on his younger life experiences, whereas in the previous film the focus is on peter at an older age; with a job. Another unique selling point to the film is that it explores different characters than in the older film e.g Gwen Stacy. On the other hand the director or the cast is not mentioned this suggests that they are not well known enough to be considered a good way to sell the film whereas with over films the cast and director are a key tool for selling the film
Target audience would mainly be males aged between 12 and 25, i have come to this conclusion for a number of reasons, firstly the film is rates a 12A which suggests that it would be suitable for people of the age to 12, secondly the film is a very recent re-make of the spiderman franchise  - mainly male, young boys 12-25

The same instruments are used thought, slow to start off with to evoke emotion and also to show that this is not a part in the film where the viewer should be expecting the traditional fast paced fight scenes, the music cuts to silence with the use of a loud drum to show that this is a keep point in the film; where he is being bitten by the spider. the trailer ends with the traditional spider man theme music the the public associate with the past spider man franchise suggesting that they want to feed of the last films popularity. The pace starts of slow and graduates with the help of music to
Dialogue"we all have secrets, the ones we keep, and the ones that are kept from us"
Voice over there is no specific voice over that is commonly associated with the super hero franchise e.g  Michael Caine (Alfred) voice over in The Dark Knight where someone connected  to the main charter talks throughout with The Amazing Spiderman the voice over is only used at the end "we all have secrets, the ones we keep, and the ones that are kept from us" which suggests that this theme of a secrets plays a major part in the plot of the film.
Credits and inter-titles with "Columbia pictures" the only peace of production information int he trailer shown centrally in the film (just after the spider bite) which suggests that the production company want to make sure they are known for this film but also by not putting any cast member or direction could mean that they are not well known enough to make people want to go and watch the film on the other hand it could suggest that

Musical- les miserables analysis

the trailer starts with introducing the production company; Universal and working title, both are big budget house hold names. Universal Studios franchises include Jaws, Fast and Furious and most recently Anna Karenina which genre is also associated with musical. the use of universal being the first thing you see in this trailer lets people know that is has has allot of money put into the production of this film and so from this you can gather that it is also going to have some big names also attached to it.

The fist image you see is a picutresk long shot of a mountain  this would appeal to people between of 50+ as it would show that the film has some amazing locations in different  landscapes something that the stage show could not bring to the telling of the story.

The trailer in many ways is reflective of a very traditional trailer in terms of shots used to introduce the actors, the screen shows the traditional font associated with the the musical fades out then has the actor mentioned making some movement towards the camera an example being when Huge Jackman`s name is shown on the screen the next shot you see is him turning toward the camera. This is an old traditional techniques not often seen in today`s trailers due to the fact that they are trying to be different to attract attention for being different, the fact that this trailer has not tried to be different suggests that its target audience is 50+ i have come to this conclusion because people of an older generation would feel more inclined to see something that they feel they is closer to the films they used to watch. Another reason why this film trailer would appeal to people aged 50+ is that they have drawn attention to the fact that the director of this film Tom Hopper is also the directer of "The Kings Speech" a film that did amazingly well both critically and commercially with that age bracket.

"I dreamed that god would be forgiving"
The trailer is set to the backing of a single song with the footage shown fitting to the song, one of the reasons why it is not a traditional film trailer where they create the music to fit the footage being shown. this different technique is effective in reiterating the point of the footage and also to juxtapose what the song is saying; an example is where the song line is "i dreamed that god would be forgiving" and the corresponding image is of a man working in chains in very harsh conditions. this juxtaposition works to show the theme of hardship, poverty and religion shown at various points in the trailer.

A birds eye shot is used to show the conformity within the nunnery and to highlight that they are all the same by shearing the same identity and work as a unit together (they get up from the table at the same time) this also works in giving back ground information of what the life of one of the lead characters life was like being and how it is now. another interesting shot used in this trailer is a mix between a pan and a high angle shot, this effect of starting up high to show what it is like behind the barrier and then panning down to a close up of the peoples faces creates both questions in the viewers mind; why is there conflict?, and crates dramatic effect by using the high angle to show how this conflict is effecting everyone and also how it has effected one person and in doing this creates the real essence of war.
