changes to posters

we have made some slight changes to 2 of our posters in that we have moved around some of the font added a the tag line "what would you do?" and "coming soon" theses minor adjustments we felt were necessary to make our posters look more authentic.

Safe House poster

Safe house is a relatively unconventional poster for an action film as there is no clear division as to which character is the "good guy" and which is the "bad guy", both Washington and Reynolds are seen with aggressive facial expression, Washington projecting an icy stare with an unsaved beard, which could suggest that he is on the run and has not had time to shave or that he is trying to change his appearance. Reynolds also holds an equally aggressive facial expression but is holding a gun to his side connoting aggression and alertness, his boy language also suggests that he is confident and not hiding shown by his open jacket.

When comparing the twos eye line, Washington is looking straight at you, creating a menacing and confrontational image of the character. This is the only indication that Washington could be the villain or the more stereotypical villain in the film. on the other hand when you look at Reynolds` eye line he is looking away from the camera and the audience that connotes a lack in confidence and an un-confrontational character this message is the opposite of Washington. This opposition is also a theme thought the poster which could suggest that these to opposite characters are being forced together that could be connoted by the long shot of Reynolds` and an extreme close up of Washington being almost forced together. This division is something that i think would be really effective and relatively simple to recreate for our poster.
The title "safe house" is red connotes danger, blood and fear this is also in contrast to the black background and the white captions around it could suggest that there is corruption (the red) amount the purity (white). The use of red is very stereotypical of the genre and something we can easily copy.

Action Poster- Robin Hood

This poster for the film  Robin hood is typical of a what you would expect from a modern action film poster with the main character Russell Crowe (Robin hood) taking the migratory of the poster, our hero is also injured also a convention of the action genre. the font on the other has is not what you typicaly expect to see on a film poster as they aim to make the film as noticeable as possible with the title being in a bold font.

The focal point of this poster is the face of the hero Crowe, the cut on his face is somewhat unconventional compared to other posters as they tend to show the hero as strong and invulnerable, but with the use of his arm being held out towards the camera allowing an eye line flow from his face along his arm and towards both the bow and arrow in his hand and the title of the film, allowing the audience an easy path to follow stopping any confusion.

there are two main fonts in use in the poster this is also unconventional to action films; where the font stays the same to stop the attraction being drawn away from the main picture to the font. The more assertive font in use is that being uses in the title  The font itself is that similar to times roman, this connotes a change in time period than the present it could also be harking back to the many Robin Hood films that use a similar font. The second font in question is that of the one giving information of the film and the cast, this is the most used of the font with it being used in 3 different location, this new more familiar font could connote the fact that it is a new story of Robin Hood not a remake of its predecessors. both of the two fonts in question are in white, which stands out among the dark background. white also connotes puirty, accepting this and applying it to the charecter in question you could come to the conclusion that this charecter who acording to ledgend was a criminal but "stole from the rich and gave to the poor" and so the white against the black background could conote the good intent in his bad actions.

poster ideas

  1. creating a mix of the two covers (Empire and Total film)
  2. Use a collector cover but add some sub-articles
  3. At the moment i feel we should go with Empire as our Title as it is more respected
  4. keep a simple colour scheme
  5. one simple picture

I feel at the moment that creating a hybrid of the two magazines would be the best option for us.

Empire magazine analysis

Empire magazine is funded by the Bauer Consumer Media group that first when into to publication in July 1989 and has gone to press monthly ever since.

The Cover in the image above is something that Empire create as a collectors addition, this is one of 3 on sale, the simplicity of it also suggests that it is aiming to attract the audience with a very powerful picture and also as a exclusive image of the new Star Trek film which has a massive fan base. This is something we could considers for our film as it would be something different but also eye catching as the audience would want to buy the magazine to find out more about our film.

total film magazine analysis

'TOTAL FILM' is a well established film magazine therefore it will be read by a lot of movie fans. I can tell that this film magazine is well respected because it includes an image from a well known film 'Inception', and the image is of the famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio. The masthead is very bold and blends in well with the blue colour scheme as it is white and blue which stands outs against the blue background. It is a bold and chunky typeface with lots of little images on it which has a masculine look as it has sharp and bold edges. There is a button which is positioned in a place next to the image so that the audience can view it easily and quickly as it stands out on the magazine as it has red and black writing on it and these are the colours that stand out on the cover. The main cover line is 'INCEPTION INSIDE THE ULTIMATE HEAD TRIP', this is in a big and bold silver typeface which almost looks 3d as it is positioned right in front of the center of the image, it is in capital letters which also makes it stand out to the audience and makes it recognizable  The typefaces used on this magazine cover match the genre of the film as they are very unique, Total Film magazine usually changes the typefaces they use to suit the film that they are featuring, unlike Empire which keeps the same typeface.

The Skyline says 'THE MIND BLOWING ISSUE', this is a clever play on words because the film Inception is about the human mind therefore it relates to the unique selling point of the issue as it has lots of articles inside the magazine about 'mind-blowing' things, for example some of the cover lines are 'THE 27 MOST MIND BLOWING MOVIES EVER' and 'MEET THE MASTERS OF MIND FLICKS', these are in a capital letter white simple typeface however 'MIND BLOWING' stands out even more as it in in red which also matches the skyline therefore the audience will realize that the skyline is connected to the inside articles too.

This is a still image taken from the film, it is a long shot so that the audience can see the characters whole persona which is shown through his costume as well as his facial expressions and body language. The image is mysterious as the character's face is in a shadow and has a serious facial expression which makes the audience want to watch the film to find out about this character. The colours scheme of the magazine is effective because the bits of white and red text stand out against the blue/silver background, this gives the magazine a very futuristic look which gives the audience an idea of what the film inception would be like and this is promoting the film so that people would want to go and watch it.

The bar code, price, issue number, date and website are all included on the magazine as they are essential but they are all quite small to keep the audiences focus on the more important features of the magazine such as the things that will draw the audience to buy it, this includes the skyline, image, etc.

The layout is quite conventional of any magazine because the image takes up most of the space as it is the main selling point however the sub articles take up most of the rest of the space because these are what the audience will be most likely to be drawn in by. However there are some empty spaces on the magazine which is quite common as it will not be appealing to the audience if there is too much text because that is seen as being boring and too tiresome to read. The spacing out of the text is done effectively because there is enough information to know what is included in the magazine but there is not too much to make it seem boring for the audience.

James bond poster analysis

The black and white colour is the first thing you notice to be different when looking at this poster, this effect creates a very dark image and classic image. when looking at the classic effect this poster has it resonates with the 50 years of history the franchise has on the other hand the overall dark image it connotes could signify a change in the stereotypical "bond character . In the the background is the image of Westminster one of the UKs key and most noticeable landmarks this could be due to the fact that in the previous bond film Quantum of solace the film was mostly filmed outside the UK and did come under some criticism for this.

In the back ground you can see dark clouds this could connote a storm and so could symbolize that there is going to be some sort of danger as well as this it could also connote that there is going to be sadness in the film due to the common scene of rain at a funeral. In the foreground you see the main character  who the audience would identify as James Bond the way he is standing is also notable as this character is not normally seen in such a relaxed/ solemn position which could suggest that he has given up he old life as a serious 007.

The Avengers poster analysis

This is the poster for the film Avengers Directed by Joss Whedon (2012). In this poster we can see the title of the film very clearly which is a key feature for a poster. This title is also key because this is a comic adaptation, the Avenger title needs to be big so that readers of the comics can recognize that this poster is for the Avengers film. The title is in a white/silver colour which could connote that the film is going to be a mysterious and probably an unconventional film as most action films have a red or bright coloured title to try and show and add empathis to the Action Genera.

The poster has an image with all the main hero's in the film. The use of this image is that everyone who has followed previous films will recognise them and that the characters are all Marvel hero's, they can understand that they have all come together to protect the earth. Having the background as a battle ground with buildings falling and planes blowing up indicates to the audience that there hero's maybe going through a struggle and may even lose the fight that is clearly being portrayed. Also, as all the main characters are still in this image, it could indicate to the viewer that these hero's are earth last hope which could create excitement for certain viewers.

There are also the names of the actors at the top of the poster all the main characters are played by famous actors and so people may recognize them from both the previous Marvel films and from other ones.Big named actors are for some films a selling point and this poster is using this to there advantage. They have the names right at the top of the poster which indicates that they are using the names as a selling point. Another feature on the poster is that it has the date of release on it. This sometimes makes the viewer want to pre-book a ticket for this date as they like the poster and are interested in watching the film. The date of release is surrounded by many names, these are the names of the production company and backstage crew, something that not many people take notice of and so the use of the release date to make this space more appealing but also the date stands out among the small writing.

poster analysis GI. Joe

Firstly, the use of colours on the advert is a contrast of dark amber and a cold dark blue divide. The use of such colours may connote the fact that there might be a evil vs evil rivalry, as there is a colour divide. The use of a dark yellow colour denotes evil and a sense of danger or corruption. On the otherhand, the use of the cold blue colours may connote the contrasting evil side which are more adept, skillful, suave and calm. Similarly, the use of tag lines in contrasting colours may connote the power struggle amongst the evil groups, for example the bold red connotes evil, sincerity, danger, malice, anger, wrath.

the use of poses in the film poster symbolises that the characters are ready for action, in conflicting positions and are sophisticated, for example the they are all carrying some type to weapon and look as if they are ready to use it this would appeal to a mainly male teenage audience.

Similarly, the framing in the film poster may suggest that these specific characters are influential in the film. The use of composition is prolific in this film poster, as the use of the title and sub heading in the centre emphasises the importance of the film as a whole.Similarly, the way the characters are positioned may imply that the gang leaders are dominant and efficacious and that each gang is seemingly powerful.
Moreover, the use of size in the film poster may suggest that the characters; mainly the leaders, are a vital part of film. Also, the size of the title and font maybe used to emphasise the popularity of the film and genre.

The film poster's use of shots and angles may imply that the characters and influential in the for action film and the poster's use of medium shots suggests that the film might emphasise on the characters which are shown on the poster. By using medium shots, the poster effectively aims to captivate the audience , as they may be induced in to watching the film due to the way the poster uses medium shots to convey the characters' poses in an action shot, which relates to the action film genre.

The use of weapons in the poster and suave, stylish clothing worn by the characters links to the action genre, as it might involve graphic violence and might revolve around a struggle for power between two rival evil gangs and might indicate that the gangs might want power for various reasons. The taglines, "Evil never looked so good", is ironic as the audience might not immediately relate to evil as being 'good', so therefore might be surprised if they are going to watch the film.

The setting for the overall poster seems to be unknown. As well as this, there is use of a mise en scene, as the clothes worn by the characters link to the genre of action,as they are tight rugged.Similarly, the facial expressions shown by the characters connote the idea of the characters being manipulative, cunning and evil, as they have a look of anticipation and readiness. The use of props such as weapons, face masks and guns immediately has an effect on the audience, as they immediately become to associate the poster to a typical action film, which usually involves, violence, revenge, power struggles and other such conventions. The film poster's use of lighting is varied, as there is use of low key lighting;it is mainly fixated on the central characters on the poster, whereas there is use of dimmed light on the other characters who might be influential but not enough. Also, there is use of under lighting and filler lighting, which is used to justify the main aspects of the poster itself and induce the audience into watching the film as there is use of emphasis and definition among the characters in the poster.

The filming was short and we managed to film it in a couple of takes, and are starting to edit it now.

action film posters

this is an image i found while looking for posters to analyse and i feel it really highlights the extent to which there is a format that some action films follow, the lead character shown in a behind low angle looking up or standing in front of a large building or object.

if we want our poster to stand out from the rest of the generic format then we should defiantly say away from this type of poster.
