PLOT
Crime drama 'The Place Beyond the Pines' tells the epic tale of two generations battling to leave the events of yesterday behind.
When motorcycle daredevil Luke (Ryan Gosling) turns bank robber and uses his riding skills to commit spectacular heists, his criminal stunts put him on a crash course with tough cop Avery Cross (Bradley Cooper), whose pursuit is as relentless as that of the demons from Luke's past.
ANALYSIS
The film starts off with a continuous shot of the movements of the main character,
this explains his back story and also helps explains the story that is yet to
come, this slows the pace down something you do not stereotypically expect to
see. The pace is also effected by transition shots in between the scenes due to
the use of fade to black it slows down the pace but builds tension by making
the viewer wonder what scene is going to be reviled next.
There are also a large amount of chase scenes shown in the trailer and this
is very stereotypical of an action film to some extent but the fighting and
explosions element you generally see in big budget film is not shown, this
creates a very real looking film as these events could happen whereas with big budget
films like "Olympus has fallen" the amount of explosions makes the overall
effect of the film seem somewhat fake in comparisons to The Place Beyond the
Pines where it has gone out of its way to seem very realistic. The mood and the
realism of this film is something that would be very easy for us to copy and
transfer in to ours.
The captions that are used in this trailer are; “one moment defines your
life" "one decision becomes your legacy" " one place"
" is where it all collides". The repeated used of the word
"one" creates a very effective flow between very different shots and
makes them seem less random. This is something we could also use in our trailer
as we plan on using very different shot types and scenes to highlight certain
aspects of our film and the use of captions will link it all together. The main
piece of dialogue that stands out is said by an unknown character " if you
ride like lightning you’re going to crash like thunder" this phrase really
sticks in your mind due to the use of nature referencing and the way he has connected
a powerful peace of nature to our leads situation. The non-diegetic music
playing lightly under the whole trailer is used very effectively to connect the
different story lines, the way the music is so light is something hardly ever
seen in action film trailers. I like the effect it has for the film but i feel
for us the music is one aspect where we should stick to the stereotypes and
have a fast paced sound track moving over and under the scenes.
The plot shown off in this trailer is also interesting as the motives of the
dad guy is explored and you get the scene that he is doing it for the right
reasons; to provide for his family, and so you feel empathy for this character.
The way the trailer has focused in on the bad guy is something not normally
seen in action films and i really like the effect it has on the audience but
for our film would be too difficult to explore. The exact location is not
revealed in the trailer but is shown to be rural/ suburban America this
location is constant thought out the trailer something that we could explore in
our own trailer.
